Ramadan Sobhi has received a one-year prison sentence with hard labour from the Giza Criminal Court, which held its session in Shubra El Kheima on Tuesday, in a case linked to forgery of official documents.
The Pyramids FC star was convicted over allegations that another person sat an exam on his behalf at an educational institute.
The case goes back to the arrest of an individual caught taking exams instead of Sobhi, which led prosecutors to charge the player with inciting this person to impersonate him. The court also jailed the man who sat the exams for a year with hard labour, acquitted one defendant and sentenced a fourth suspect in absentia to ten years in prison.
Sobhi’s lawyer, Ashraf Abdelaziz, confirmed that the player will file an appeal against the ruling in the coming period. The hearing drew strong attention, with members of Sobhi’s family present in court alongside several Pyramids teammates, including Sherif Ekramy, Ali Gabr and Mohamed Reda Bobo.
The verdict comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport had previously suspended Sobhi for four years over a doping sample manipulation case, compounding the challenges facing the former Egypt international.
