Rafik Belghali returns for Hellas Verona, deployed as left wing-back
Rafik Belghali returned to Hellas Verona’s starting lineup yesterday in a Serie A match against Atalanta Bergamo, but was deployed in an unfamiliar left wing-back role.
This marked Belghali’s first full 90-minute appearance since the Africa Cup of Nations, following an ankle injury sustained at the end of January.
The 24-year-old right-back had only managed three appearances in two months prior to this match, including a substitute appearance against Genoa CFC and a bench presence for the victory over Bologna FC.
In Bergamo, Belghali was given a hybrid role, operating both as an attacking left wing-back and, at times, as a midfielder.
He came close to creating a goal-scoring opportunity with a well-placed cross that tested Atalanta’s defence.
Despite his energetic performance, Verona were unable to secure a result and lost 2-0. The defeat leaves them in a precarious position in Serie A, nine points adrift of the first non-relegation spot, highlighting the challenges the club faces in the relegation battle.
Belghali’s versatility in adapting to the left flank was praised by observers, showcasing his technical ability and stamina, even in a position opposite to his usual right-back role.
However, the team’s defensive lapses and struggles to create consistent attacking chances meant they could not capitalize on his contributions.
With his first full match of the year now complete, Belghali will look to build fitness and form as Hellas Verona continue to fight for survival in Italy’s top flight.
The club will hope that his return can strengthen their squad in upcoming fixtures and help close the gap to safety.
