Radiopane has chance to become Pirates’ leading striker

Boitumelo Radiopane has been handed an opportunity to establish himself as Orlando Pirates’ main attacking option after making a decisive contribution against Sekhukhune United.

The 23-year-old scored the opening goal in Tuesday night’s match against Babina Noko before creating the second for Oswin Appollis, producing the kind of all-round performance that could change his fortunes at the Soweto club.

Radiopane’s timing is significant. Yanela Mbuthuma has struggled to convert chances, while new signing Sebastian Pedersen is still adapting to his surroundings. Evidence Makgopa has also been unavailable while recovering from injury, leaving Pirates in need of a reliable number nine.

The club therefore require a forward capable of leading the line, taking responsibility in attack and consistently posing a threat in front of goal. Radiopane’s display against Sekhukhune suggested he may be ready to take on that role.

For much of his time at Orlando Pirates, the striker has found it difficult to secure a regular place in the first team. Injuries disrupted his progress, while adapting to senior football proved challenging despite the promise he displayed during his time in the DStv Diski Challenge.

That potential has never entirely disappeared, but opportunities have been limited. His performance this week, however, offered a reminder of the qualities that made him one of the club’s more promising young forwards.

Radiopane showed composure to finish for Pirates’ first goal and then demonstrated his creativity by supplying Appollis for the second. The combination of scoring and assisting gave the club’s supporters reason to believe the striker could finally be ready to make a sustained impact.

A modern centre-forward is judged on more than goals. The position demands involvement in build-up play, the ability to create opportunities for team-mates and a willingness to lead the press when the opposition have possession.

Radiopane appeared capable of meeting those demands against Sekhukhune. His contribution was not limited to finishing moves; he also helped connect the attack and provided an outlet for his team in the final third.

The challenge now is to turn one impressive performance into a consistent run of form. Regular game time would allow Radiopane to build confidence and give him the chance to develop a greater understanding with Pirates’ attacking players.

If he can maintain the level he showed against Sekhukhune United, he could become an important figure for the Buccaneers in domestic football and in their continental campaign.

The club’s current shortage of established attacking options has created a clear opening. Radiopane’s next task is to take it and convince Orlando Pirates that their search for a leading striker may already have produced its answer.
