A video that began circulating widely on social media on Thursday evening has caused shock and outrage across England, after appearing to show a group of Chelsea supporters directing racist abuse at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. The footage, filmed inside a bar, shows fans chanting offensive slogans about the Egyptian international, including the deeply offensive phrase, “Salah is a bomber,” aimed at the former Chelsea player.
The video quickly spread online, drawing condemnation from football fans, anti-racism campaigners, and clubs alike. Many described the chants as Islamophobic and racist, highlighting once again the persistent problem of discrimination within football culture, both inside and outside stadiums.
Liverpool Football Club responded swiftly to the incident, issuing a strong statement denouncing the behavior captured in the video. The Merseyside club described the footage as “dangerous and disturbing,” emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and the harm caused by such language. Liverpool made it clear that there should be no ambiguity in how the actions of the individuals involved are interpreted, stating that the behavior “must be called what it is: pure bigotry.” The club reiterated its firm stance against racism in all forms and expressed its support for Mohamed Salah.
Chelsea Football Club also reacted publicly, condemning what it described as “horrible discriminatory behavior.” In an official statement, the London club stressed that racism and discrimination have no place in football or society. Chelsea added that it would “take the strongest possible action” against those responsible, should it be confirmed that the individuals involved are club members or season-ticket holders. The club noted that it is working to identify the people shown in the video and will cooperate fully with any investigation.
The incident comes at a particularly sensitive time, as Chelsea are due to travel to Anfield on Sunday for their Premier League clash with Liverpool, part of the 34th round of fixtures. The match, already significant in the race for European qualification, now carries additional emotional weight in light of the controversy.
Mohamed Salah, who joined Chelsea in 2014 before leaving the club two years later, has since become one of the Premier League’s most high-profile and respected players during his time at Liverpool. Beyond his performances on the pitch, the Egyptian forward is widely admired for his positive influence off it, regularly being praised for challenging stereotypes and serving as a role model for millions around the world.
This latest incident once again raises questions about the effectiveness of ongoing campaigns to combat racism in football. While clubs, leagues, and governing bodies have repeatedly pledged zero tolerance, episodes like this underline the continued need for education, accountability, and meaningful sanctions to ensure that discriminatory behavior is stamped out of the game.
