Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium hailed as Morocco’s new sporting jewel
The new Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat has been described by Italian newspaper Tuttosport as a “new jewel” of global football architecture, following its official inauguration earlier this month.
Designed by the internationally renowned firm Populous, the stadium seats 68,700 spectators and features a striking LED-lit façade inspired by Moroccan cultural motifs and Rabat’s palm-lined streets.
Its opening was presided over on 4 September by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, with the Atlas Lions christening the venue a day later in style — a 5-0 victory against Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
According to Tuttosport, the stadium’s design prioritises atmosphere and acoustics, ensuring fans are placed close to the pitch to amplify noise and energy levels.
This creates what the outlet described as a “wall of sound,” designed to heighten the connection between players and supporters.
The venue was built under the supervision of Morocco’s National Agency for Public Equipment and meets FIFA standards, already securing approval to host fixtures up to the semi-finals during the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
The golden exterior façade, covering 100,000 square metres, comprises 19,200 aluminium triangles of varying dimensions, interlaced with 70 kilometres of LED strips to create dynamic light displays.
This intricate design, rooted in Moroccan craftsmanship such as Fez embroidery, gives the stadium a modern yet culturally resonant identity, blending seamlessly with Rabat’s natural landscape.
Among its most distinctive features is the South Stand, dubbed the “beating heart” of the stadium, accommodating 23,000 spectators across two tiers.
The upper level rises eight metres above the lower, generating the sensation of being almost on top of the action.
The West Wing hosts the Royal Pavilion, VIP boxes and lounges, while the East Wing provides versatile hospitality spaces across three floors, each carefully designed to maximise views of the pitch and, in particular, towards the vibrant South Stand.
Tuttosport also commended the record speed of the project, with construction beginning in September 2023 and completed in just two years.
The feat was attributed to precise coordination between the Moroccan company SGTM, Populous’ global offices, and the supervising authorities.
Accessibility has also been emphasised, with the forecourt serving as a public plaza that links directly to a new train station, providing connections to nearby districts including Hay Riad and Akari.
François Clément, a director at Populous, praised the achievement, saying: “Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium is a new jewel in world football, not only in Morocco, but also in Africa and the world. We have provided world-class infrastructure, enhanced in terms of fan access and the viewing experience, with the boldest and most ambitious facade in the history of stadium design.”
