Queiroz handed fresh Ghana task as Black Stars target 2027 AFCON

Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana, with the Portuguese set to begin a new spell in charge during the next international window.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Queiroz to lead the Black Stars into the next phase of their programme.

Queiroz’s first period as Ghana head coach ended a few weeks after the 2026 World Cup, where he oversaw all three matches played by the national team. His return will begin during the forthcoming international break, when Ghana’s focus will turn to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Cote d’Ivoire on 24 September before meeting Gambia in Group C.

In a statement, the GFA said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as head coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme. Following discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would begin a new tenure as coach, starting from the next international window.”

The agreement marks a renewed partnership between Queiroz and Ghana after his initial tenure concluded shortly after the World Cup. Although the first spell covered the tournament itself, the Portuguese coach is now being brought back to oversee the next stage of the national side’s development.

The GFA said it had been persuaded by Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars. Those qualities will be central to the federation’s plans as Ghana begins its preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Queiroz’s immediate responsibility will be to launch this new phase with the national team and guide Ghana towards qualification for the tournament. The opening fixtures against Cote d’Ivoire and Gambia will provide the first competitive test of his second mandate.

The federation’s announcement did not provide further details about the length of the new agreement. It confirmed, however, that the Portuguese will take charge from the next international window, placing the upcoming Group C matches at the centre of his return.

Ghana will therefore enter the next stage of its programme with a familiar figure in the dugout. Queiroz’s previous experience with the Black Stars, combined with his wider international background, is being placed at the heart of the federation’s attempt to secure a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
