Qualifying for 2026 FIFA World Cup still in our hands – Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos
The head coach of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, Hugo Broos, has expressed optimism in their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being docked three points.
The experienced tactician has called for unity ahead of South Africa’s final two matches in the qualification.
“There’s still a World Cup ticket to fight for. Instead of arguing about who is at fault for the points deduction, we must look forward. The players need support, not distraction, because the dream of qualification is still alive,” Broos said.
The ruling has sparked anger and debate among South African football circles, especially after Bafana’s promising start. But Broos stressed that calm heads and collective responsibility are vital if the team is to overcome the setback.
“Almost everyone connected to the team shares responsibility,” he noted. “Pointing fingers will not help us now. What matters is how we respond in the next matches.”
Broos, who famously guided Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, believes his current squad has already shown progress and the resilience needed to finish strongly.
“We still have a bright chance of qualifying,” he concluded. “It is in our hands, and with unity and focus, we can make it happen.”
In the October international break, South Africa will take on Zimbabwe and Rwanda to wrap up their qualifiers.
