Pyramids FC may have celebrated a hard-fought win over Ismaily, but a bizarre mix-up during the game has left the African champions facing an expected fine.
In Thursday’s Egyptian Premier League clash at the Air Defense Stadium, defender Mahmoud Marei started the match wearing the number 3 shirt. When the second half began, he appeared in teammate Ali Gabr’s number 5 shirt by mistake. The error was spotted, and Marei switched back to his own shirt.
Pyramids still secured a 1-0 victory through Marawan Hamdy’s goal, yet league rules state players must wear only the number registered in the match report. The club is set to be fined 10,000 Egyptian pounds, with the threat of a doubled penalty if it happens again.
After the game, assistant coach Mohamed Nagy Gedo admitted the team needed to be sharper in converting chances. Ismaily’s coach Miloud Hamdi praised his young squad despite the loss. In separate news, Ismaily confirmed Marawan Hamdy suffered a broken metatarsal and will be sidelined for a month.
