Egyptian outfit Pyramids FC have set their sights on reaching the final of the CAF Champions League following a standout performance against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
Pyramids held Orlando Pirates to a pulsating goalless draw in the first of the semifinals at the Iconic FNB Stadium. The Egyptian club will go into the return clash with a slender advantage, having secured a crucial away draw.
With this, Pyramids stands a huge chance of reaching their first-ever CAF Champions League final with a gritty 0-0 draw.
Following in the footsteps of defending champions Al Ahly, the Cairo-based club delivered a composed display in Soweto, controlling possession and posing the greater offensive threat.
The Sky Blues thought they had opened the scoring in the first half, but their goal was controversially disallowed for offside—replays showed the ball had deflected off a Pirates defender, not a Pyramids player.
Celebrations broke out in stoppage time as Walid El Karti’s header bounced off Sodiq Awujoola and into the net. But just before the ball crossed the line, Awujoola chalked out the goal for handball following a protracted VAR review.
The return leg between Pyramids and Orlando Pirates in Egypt has been scheduled for April 25.
