Pyramids FC maintain perfect start with narrow win over Al-Masry

Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids FC made it three victories from three Egyptian Premier League matches after Ahmed Samy’s early goal secured a 1-0 win over Al-Masry.

The result kept Pyramids at the top of the table with nine points and extended their winning run to three matches. They have also yet to concede, recording a third successive clean sheet in the process.

Pyramids began the campaign with victories over Ghazl El Mahalla and Abu Qir Fertilizers, and arrived for the meeting with Al-Masry in first place. Their opponents had also won both of their opening fixtures, setting up a contest between two unbeaten sides.

However, the match was decided by a single goal. Club veteran Ahmed Samy put the 2024/25 CAF Champions League winners ahead in the 11th minute, and Pyramids held on to protect that advantage for the remainder of the game.

The victory was particularly significant given Pyramids’ recent record against Al-Masry. They had not beaten them since May 2024. In the meetings since then, Al-Masry had recorded one win, while the other three matches had ended in draws.

Mokwena’s side were able to overcome that difficult run and preserve their flawless start to the domestic season. Their six goals across the opening three matches, combined with their perfect defensive record, have taken them back to the summit of the Egyptian Premier League.

The result also gives Pyramids momentum before their return to continental competition. They begin their CAF Champions League campaign away from home this coming weekend, when they face Kenyan side Gor Mahia FC.

Pyramids will therefore travel for their opening match in the competition with three league wins behind them and confidence built on a defence that has not conceded in any of those matches. Their narrow success against Al-Masry ensured that the unbeaten start continued, while the early strike from Ahmed Samy proved enough to settle a closely contested fixture.

Al-Masry had been seeking to extend their own winning start and add to Pyramids’ recent difficulties in this fixture. Instead, the home? [Need no home, remove.] Pyramids’ disciplined display allowed them to reclaim top spot and maintain their perfect record.

The focus now turns to the CAF Champions League, with Pyramids set to open their campaign against Gor Mahia FC in Kenya this weekend.
