Pyramids FC given September dates for Gor Mahia Champions League tie
Pyramids FC will begin their CAF Champions League campaign with an away match against Kenya’s Gor Mahia at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, 6 September, after the Confederation of African Football confirmed the dates and kick-off times for their round-of-64 tie.
The first leg will start at 15:00 local time, with Pyramids travelling to the Kenyan capital for the opening meeting of the two-match contest.
The return fixture has been scheduled for 20:00 on Saturday, 13 September, at Air Defence Stadium in Cairo. Pyramids FC will therefore finish the tie at home, with qualification for the next stage decided over the two legs.
The Egyptian side are taking part in the CAF Champions League for the fourth consecutive season. Their recent continental record includes winning the competition two seasons ago, when they defeated South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate in the final.
Pyramids followed that success by claiming the African Super Cup, adding another continental honour to their record. They also won the three-continent cup as part of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
The club’s preparations for the Champions League come during the early stages of the Egyptian Premier League season. Pyramids opened their domestic campaign with a 3-0 victory over Ghazl El Mahalla, giving them a winning start before their next league assignment.
They are due to face Abu Qir Fertilizers on Thursday in the second round of the Egyptian Premier League. That match will provide Pyramids with another opportunity to build momentum before the September meetings with Gor Mahia.
The first-leg trip to Nairobi will be followed one week later by the decisive home fixture in Cairo, as Pyramids begin their latest attempt to progress through Africa’s leading club competition.
