Pyramids FC backed to win Egyptian Premier League by former Al Ahly star
Former Al Ahly forward Mohamed Abdel Jalil believes Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids FC are the leading contenders to win this season’s Egyptian Premier League.
The reigning CAF Champions League winners have made a perfect start to the league campaign, coming from behind to beat Eastern Enppi 2-1 on Thursday.
Jalil said Pyramids possess the strongest squad in the league and tipped them to end Zamalek’s reign as champions.
“Pyramids FC has three top-level defenders, but Al Ahly will not be able to sign any of them,” he told Ysscores.
“Pyramids FC is the top contender for the Egyptian League, and I feel envious of the performance of Pyramids FC’s players and their current squad.”
The former Egypt international also suggested Al Ahly supporters may need to be patient this season, saying he had concerns about the club’s trajectory since last term.
“I will bear the loss of Al Ahly in the Egyptian League this season because of my knowledge of what has been happening since last season,” he said.
Jalil also defended Al Ahly head coach Al-Hussein Amouta, insisting it is too early to judge his work despite a disappointing start.
“I am astonished by the performance of Al Ahly in the Egyptian League, and the idea of downplaying Al-Hussein Amouta is unacceptable, as he is a great coach,” he added.
“It is still early to judge Amouta, and the match against Zamalek will be his last chance to reassess his situation.”
