Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns set for epic CAF Champions League final

Egyptian club, Pyramids FC, secured a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Orlando Pirates on Friday night to book a place in the final of this season’s CAF Champions League, where they will face off with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

The showdown for the ultimate prize has been set up nicely after the conclusion of the two semi-final games today.

In the first game played between Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns, the record champions were stunned by a late equaliser that denied the side a place in the final.

Al Ahly scored first in the 24th minute to the delight of the home fans. Tricky winger Emam Ashour set up Taher Mohamed, who equalised with a fantastic strike to break the deadlock of the game.

That goal separated the two teams at halftime before Mamelodi Sundowns returned from the break to mount a fightback.

Late in injury time, the pressure mounted by the South African side paid off as Al Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim turned the ball into his own net.

Despite protests of a handball in the build-up, the referee would have none of it. Eventually, a 1-1 draw meant that Mamelodi Sundowns knocked out Al Ahly courtesy of the away goal rule to advance into the final.

The second game between Pyramids FC and Orlando Pirates produced fireworks.

Both Pyramids FC and Orlando Pirates went into the game with everything to play for after the first leg of their semi-final tie ended in a goalless stalemate.

The crunch meeting did not disappoint with either side giving it their all from the start of the first half.

It was the visiting team that took the lead through Relebohile Mofokeng in the 41st minute after he was set up by Tapelo Xoki.

Unfortunately, the team could not hold onto the lead before the halftime whistle. A strike from Fiston Mayele in the final minutes of the first half meant that both teams went into the break on level pegging.

Just as the first half panned out, the second half was more of the same and even better.

Mohau Nkota equalised in the 52nd minute to restore the lead for Orlando Pirates.

However, goals from Ramadan Sobhi and Fiston Mayele later in the game propelled Pyramids FC to come from behind to secure a 3-2 win at the end of the 90 minutes.

Pyramids must now prepare for what should be a thrilling final against Mamelodi Sundowns in May.
