Pyramids deny Rulani Mokwena confrontation with Mostafa Fathi

Pyramids FC have denied reports that head coach Rulani Mokwena was involved in a confrontation with Mostafa Fathi during their CAF Champions League victory over Gor Mahia.

Mokwena has made a perfect start to his tenure at the Egyptian club, winning all four of his matches in charge.

Pyramids followed up three Egyptian Premier League victories with a 2-0 away win against Kenyan side Gor Mahia on Sunday in the first leg of their Champions League second-round tie.

The result gives Pyramids a significant advantage heading into the return leg at home on Sunday, 13 September.

Reports in Egypt had suggested that Fathi was unhappy after being substituted and had exchanged words with Mokwena.

However, Pyramids have reportedly rejected that version of events, insisting the player’s frustration was directed at the fourth official rather than the South African coach.

According to WinWin, the club explained that the fourth official was urging Fathi and Abdelrahman Magdy to leave the pitch quickly after they were substituted.

The official was reportedly counting down to ensure the players did not delay the substitutions, with any delay potentially resulting in the incoming players having to wait a minute before entering the field.

Fathi is said to have been unhappy with the situation and questioned the fourth official’s reaction.

Mokwena then intervened, attempting to calm the player while also congratulating him on his performance.

The exchange was subsequently interpreted as a confrontation between Mokwena and Fathi, but Pyramids insist there was no disagreement between the coach and his player.

Mokwena will now look to maintain his unbeaten start when Pyramids host Gor Mahia in the second leg, with a place in the next round of the Champions League at stake.
