Ahmed El-Shenawy aims to secure first championship in UAE under watchful eyes

Pyramids FC have ended speculation over the absence of goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy from the upcoming Intercontinental Cup, confirming that he remains in the club’s plans for the tournament in Qatar this month.

The African champions will play on 13 December in Doha against the winner of Cruz Azul of Mexico, champions of North America, and Flamengo of Brazil, champions of South America.

Pyramids booked their ticket to the competition in style, beating Auckland City of New Zealand 3-0, then overcoming Saudi side Al Ahli 3-1 in Jeddah. El Shenawy suffered an injury in the recent CAF Champions League group match against Power Dynamos of Zambia, a game Pyramids won 1-0, which raised fears he might miss the Intercontinental Cup.

Club doctor Mostafa El Manieri explained that scans showed a strong bruise on the outside of El Shenawy’s knee, requiring only a few days of treatment and rehabilitation.

The target is for him to be ready for the league clash against Petrojet next Sunday, which effectively rules out any talk of his exclusion from the Intercontinental campaign. El Shenawy is also included in Egypt’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
