Pyramids calm fears over goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy injury against Power Dynamos

Pyramids have confirmed that goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy suffered a heavy knock to the outside of his knee during the CAF Champions League group-stage win away to Zambia’s Power Dynamos.

The Egypt international was forced off after 37 minutes, with Mahmoud Gad coming on, as the Egyptian champions went on to claim a 1-0 victory in Ndola that took them to six points and second place in Group A.

Club doctor Mostafa El Moniri explained that initial examinations showed a strong contusion on the lateral side of the knee, and that El Shenawy will undergo scans and further tests once the team returns to Cairo to determine the exact extent of the damage. The medical staff will then draw up a treatment and recovery plan based on the results, but early signs at least ruled out a more dramatic on-pitch incident.

Head coach Krunoslav Jurcic, meanwhile, expressed his delight with the hard-fought away win and praised the quality of Power Dynamos on their home turf.

Speaking after the match, he said he had expected a difficult game and warned that winning the first two group fixtures “does not mean qualification is guaranteed,” pointing to the late comeback of RS Berkane against Rivers United in Nigeria as proof that the competition is unpredictable.

Jurcic stressed that Pyramids must return immediately to Cairo to focus on maintaining their momentum in the domestic league as well as Africa.
