PSG v Aston Villa: 1.81 odds headline UEFA Super Cup prediction

Paris Saint-Germain face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on 12 August 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT. The match offers an immediate European rematch after their Champions League quarter-final meetings in 2024-25, while a cautious prediction has been linked to odds of 1.81.

Paris Saint-Germain will arrive as reigning European champions after winning a second successive UEFA Champions League title. They also lifted the UEFA Super Cup last season and are aiming to extend their recent dominance in continental competition.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, will take confidence from an impressive 2025-26 campaign. The Birmingham club won the UEFA Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League, securing qualification for the next Champions League. Under former Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery, Villa are looking to establish themselves once again among Europe’s leading clubs.

The fixture also revives memories of the clubs’ only previous meetings. In the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-finals, PSG won the first leg 3-1 at Parc des Princes before Aston Villa claimed a 3-2 victory in Birmingham. That result was not enough to overturn the tie, with the French side advancing by virtue of their first-leg success.

This year’s meeting comes at an unusual stage of the season. Several players are still returning to full fitness after the World Cup, while both clubs have undergone significant changes during the summer. PSG have doubts over a number of established players, and Aston Villa will be without some regular starters as they integrate several new arrivals.

Paris Saint-Germain seek another European trophy

PSG’s status as favourites is underpinned by an exceptional previous campaign. They won five trophies: a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, the Trophee des Champions and the UEFA Super Cup.

Their European run also included a notable sequence of victories against English opposition. Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were all eliminated by Luis Enrique’s side.

Now entering his third season in charge, Luis Enrique is targeting further success and has already set his sights on a third consecutive Champions League triumph. The final is scheduled for early June at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

However, PSG’s most recent results have been mixed. They lost 3-0 to Mallorca before drawing with Manchester United in their last two outings.

The French champions could also be without several important players for the Super Cup. Ousmane Dembele, who was directly involved in 31 goals during an outstanding season, is among those unlikely to be fully ready. Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue, both credited with 13 goals, are also doubts.

In midfield, Fabian Ruiz and Warren Zaire-Emery could miss out. Achraf Hakimi’s availability is uncertain, while Lucas Hernandez is also a doubt. Nuno Mendes, normally the first-choice left-back, may be rested.

New defensive signing Lucas Digne is not expected to be ready to face his former club after moving from Aston Villa to PSG.

The Parisian side have also lost squad players during the transfer window. Goncalo Ramos, who scored 12 goals last season, has joined AC Milan, while reserve goalkeeper Arnau Tenas has left the club.

That makes Khvicha Kvaratskhelia a particularly important figure in attack. The Georgia international was PSG’s leading scorer in the Champions League last season, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists.

Villa aiming to build on Europa League success

Aston Villa also have selection concerns before the meeting. Emery will be unable to call on midfielders Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana, both of whom are injured and normally start for the club.

Villa have seen several prominent players depart during the summer. Morgan Rogers, who contributed to 26 goals last season, has moved to Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United. Digne has completed the move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Other players have also left after less convincing spells. Jadon Sancho scored once in 39 appearances, while Harvey Elliott and Douglas Luiz have returned to their respective clubs. Villa have additionally parted company with squad players including Donyell Malen, who has joined AS Roma, Enzo Barrenechea, now at Benfica, Lewis Dobbin, Alex Garcia and goalkeeper Oskar Zych.

There have been reinforcements as well. Swiss World Cup revelation Fabian Rieder Manzambi has arrived from Freiburg, winger Alejandro Garnacho has joined on loan from Chelsea, and Joao Gomes has moved from Wolverhampton.

Emiliano Martinez remains a major doubt. The Argentina goalkeeper has only just returned to training, leaving his involvement in the UEFA Super Cup uncertain.

Despite the departures and injuries, Villa can still rely on Ollie Watkins, who scored 21 goals last season.

The team began their pre-season with a convincing 5-0 win over Walsall, who play in the fourth tier of English football. Villa then increased the quality of their opposition by facing FC Porto, Real Sociedad and, most recently, Bayern Munich.

That demanding preparation is intended to leave Emery’s side ready for another European challenge.

The previous quarter-final meetings suggest both teams are capable of threatening in attack. Each side scored in both matches: PSG won 3-1 in Paris, while Villa responded with a 3-2 victory at home.

The prediction is described as a cautious one because PSG remain favourites and have greater experience of major European occasions. Both teams also possess enough attacking quality to produce at least two goals.

Paris Saint-Germain therefore start with the advantage as they seek another trophy, although Aston Villa’s recent progress and their ability to trouble PSG mean the UEFA Super Cup should provide a significant early-season test.
