PSG consider Porto defender as replacement option for Achraf Hakimi

Paris Saint-Germain are considering Porto right-back Alberto Costa as they continue their search for a player who can provide cover for Morocco international Achraf Hakimi.

The French champions are looking for another option at right-back after failing to sign a suitable player during the summer transfer window who would accept a secondary role behind Hakimi.

PSG’s management are now assessing alternative names as they look to give the coaching staff greater depth in the position during a season involving a demanding domestic and European schedule.

According to the website Caught Offside, Costa has emerged as a player of interest to the Paris club.

The Portuguese defender currently plays for Porto and has also attracted interest from a number of English clubs.

PSG seek competition and cover for Hakimi

Hakimi remains PSG’s first-choice player at right-back, but the club want to find a player capable of allowing him to rest during parts of the campaign.

The proposed solution would give the Moroccan international opportunities to take a break from some French league and Champions League fixtures while ensuring the team maintains an option in the position.

PSG had attempted to address the issue during the summer transfer window but were unable to complete a deal for a player willing to operate behind Hakimi.

The club have therefore continued to examine possible candidates, with Costa now among the names being considered.

Costa’s Porto contract could prove costly

Any attempt to sign Costa could face an important financial obstacle.

The defender joined Porto from Juventus for €15m and subsequently signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2030.

That agreement includes a release clause worth up to €65m, meaning PSG could have to consider a substantial investment if they decide to pursue the player.

Costa’s long-term contract with Porto could therefore make negotiations more complicated for the French club.

Paris Saint-Germain have the financial resources to consider a significant transfer, with the club recording a positive result of more than €180m during the summer transfer window.

However, spending €65m on a player whose principal role would be to provide cover for Hakimi would require careful consideration.

The club’s priority is not to replace Hakimi as the established first-choice right-back, but to add another option who can give the Moroccan international periods of rest while maintaining the team’s level across its competitions.

Hakimi continues to occupy the main right-back position for PSG, making the search for a replacement particularly focused on squad depth rather than a change in the hierarchy.

The club’s failure to find an appropriate player during the previous transfer window has prompted further work on the position.

Costa’s situation has now brought another potential solution into consideration, although his €65m release clause represents a significant financial commitment.
