PSG consider Chelsea’s Malo Gusto as Luis Enrique seeks defensive cover

Paris Saint-Germain are considering a move for Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto as they continue to strengthen their squad before the new season, with manager Luis Enrique understood to have approved the Frenchman as a possible alternative to Achraf Hakimi.

The 23-year-old, who was born in Decines-Charpieu, has emerged as a potential target for the Champions League holders despite the deal not being regarded as one of their main priorities this summer.

PSG began their first match since winning the Champions League for a second time on Wednesday, 67 days after lifting the trophy. They suffered a 3-0 defeat by Real Mallorca, who have been relegated to the Spanish second division.

The French club were without a large number of their international players for the match, but remain active in the transfer market as they look to add further depth before the campaign begins.

Lucas Digne and Maghnes Akliouche are both reportedly close to joining PSG, although neither move has been formally announced. The club are also pursuing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki of Parma and Ajax midfielder Mika Godts, with negotiations for both players continuing while the deals remain complicated.

Gusto is now another name under consideration. The Sun reports that PSG are assessing whether the Chelsea defender would justify a substantial transfer fee, with his qualities believed to appeal particularly to Luis Enrique.

Chelsea are said to be open to allowing Gusto to leave, especially following the arrival of Marco Balletra at Stamford Bridge. However, the player is valued at 87m euros, a figure considered high despite his ability and potential. It remains difficult to envisage PSG agreeing to pay that amount without further negotiations.

Gusto came through the youth system at Olympique Lyonnais before moving to Chelsea in 2023 for 35m euros. He made 49 appearances in all competitions for the club last season, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

He has also been selected by France for the 2026 World Cup, adding to his appeal as PSG consider whether to pursue the deal.

Manchester City, who are also looking for a right-back, have placed Gusto on their list of transfer targets. Chelsea have not ruled out his departure, meaning the French defender could attract interest from more than one leading club during the transfer window.

PSG’s potential interest comes despite Warren Zaire-Emery’s impressive performances when deputising for Hakimi. The France international has provided a reliable alternative to the Morocco right-back, which meant signing another player in that position was not initially a priority for the Paris club.

For now, there has been no confirmation in France that PSG will make an offer for Gusto or that an agreement is close. Chelsea’s willingness to consider his sale is the clearest indication that a move could be possible, but the valuation remains a significant obstacle.
