Prince Nxumalo says he wants to play on after leaving AmaTuks

Former Motsepe Foundation Championship top scorer Prince Nxumalo says he is not considering retirement after parting company with University of Pretoria, insisting he can continue playing for another two or three seasons.

The 36-year-old forward recently left the National First Division (NFD) club, also known as AmaTuks, in a move first reported by FARPost. He is now a free agent and is hoping to secure another opportunity in South African football.

Nxumalo joined University of Pretoria before the start of the 2025/26 campaign after an impressive final season with JDR Stars. He scored nine goals for the Hammer Boys before making the move to Tshwane.

The experienced striker made a significant contribution during his time at AmaTuks, appearing in 20 matches in all competitions and scoring eight goals. His progress was interrupted, however, by a long-term injury which kept him out of action for three months.

Despite that extended absence, Nxumalo played an important role as University of Pretoria finished 11th in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. AmaTuks ended the campaign with 35 points from 30 league matches.

Nxumalo believes older players are often dismissed too quickly in South African football. Although he is now 36, he says he remains fit enough to continue competing and is determined to find a new club.

“I still want to play. I believe I can still push for two to three seasons,” Nxumalo told FARPost.

“But you know it gets difficult in South African football when a player reaches the age of 35 or 36. You are immediately considered old. But honestly, I’m not yet tired; I still have the legs to carry on. I believe God will hear my prayers to find another team.”

The forward has built a considerable amount of experience across both the top flight and second tier of South African football. His previous clubs include SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits, Golden Arrows, Sekhukhune United, Baroka FC and Ubuntu Cape Town.

Nxumalo’s departure from AmaTuks means he is now without a club, but the former Motsepe Foundation Championship leading scorer remains focused on extending his career rather than preparing for retirement.

His immediate priority is to find a team willing to give him the chance to demonstrate that his age has not ended his ability to contribute in front of goal.
