The English Football Association (FA) has officially announced that Nicolas Anelka, who made a “quenelle” gesture during a match with West Bromwich Albion on December 28, will face suspension. The FA stated that Anelka’s actions constituted an “insulting/indecent/inappropriate gesture and [were] contrary to the rules of the Federation.” The association emphasized that the offense was aggravated due to the gesture’s reference to race, religion, or ethnic origin. In response, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku expressed his opinion that Anelka should not be punished, asserting that Anelka was merely supporting an artist in France, and he hopes the French striker doesn’t get suspended.
