Despite Romelu Lukaku leading Everton’s attack, the team suffered a defeat on Southampton’s turf. In the opening match of the 36th day of the Premier League, Roberto Martinez’s side was defeated 2-0 by the Saints.
Both goals were scored as own goals by Alcaraz (1st) and Coleman (31st). Despite trailing, Everton couldn’t muster enough danger in Southampton’s box to overturn the scoreline.
Romelu Lukaku didn’t have a particularly good game either. The Belgian international of Congolese origin attempted a couple of shots in the first half, sending the ball high into the stands, and one header in the second half that was neutralized by Boruc. His overall performance, both in front of goal and in general play, was below par, marked by numerous lost balls and unsuccessful duels.
The defeat sees Southampton climb to 8th place, while Everton remains in 5th position, one point behind Arsenal, who will play against Newcastle on Monday.
