Benteke Faces Firmino Challenge as Klopp Shapes Liverpool’s Attack
Since Jürgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield, Liverpool have undergone a visible transformation both in style and results. But for Belgian striker Christian Benteke, the German’s tactical revolution could mean an uncertain future in the starting XI.
Benteke, signed from Aston Villa for £32.5m in the summer, endured a frustrating evening in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad. While the Red Devils forward of Congolese descent worked hard, it was Brazilian Roberto Firmino who stole the show, scoring twice and setting up another as Klopp’s high-pressing system overwhelmed City’s defence.
The performance highlighted a potential shift in Liverpool’s attacking hierarchy. Firmino’s mobility and technical flair fit seamlessly into Klopp’s high-energy style, in contrast to Benteke’s more physical, traditional centre-forward approach. If the Brazilian maintains this level of form, Benteke may find himself used more as an impact substitute – brought on to hold up play or add power in late-game situations.
Despite the competition, Benteke remains positive about his role and relationship with the new manager. Speaking about Klopp, the Belgian international said:
*”He’s our friend, but not our best friend. He’s there if we need him, but we have to do what he asks. The atmosphere has changed here because everyone knows what he did at his old club. Everyone wants to make a good impression.”*
The striker also revealed that his connection with Klopp stretches back several years. During his breakthrough campaign at Aston Villa, Klopp – then in charge of Borussia Dortmund – expressed interest in signing him.
*”It was after my first season at Villa. He spoke with my manager about a transfer, but in the end nothing happened,”* Benteke explained. *”That doesn’t influence my position here. We are at Liverpool now, and everyone has to fight for their place.”*
Klopp, who built his reputation at Dortmund on fast, collective attacking football, has wasted no time imposing the same philosophy at Liverpool. His animated presence on the touchline and the team’s improved intensity have already reignited optimism among supporters.
For Benteke, however, the challenge is clear: adapt his game to Klopp’s demands or accept a reduced role. With Liverpool competing on multiple fronts this season, squad rotation will offer him opportunities. But with Firmino flourishing, the Belgian’s long-term place as Liverpool’s first-choice striker is now under scrutiny.
