Arriving at Old Trafford this summer for a hefty fee of 32.5 million euros, Marouane Fellaini failed to live up to expectations. The Belgian international, of Moroccan descent, has endured heavy criticism throughout the season, mirroring the struggles of his club. Both player and team are eager to put this season behind them and focus on the future. As the Premier League draws to a close, with Manchester United battling for a Europa League spot on the final day against Southampton, Fellaini reflects on his debut season with the Red Devils.
“After the season concludes, I’ll begin preparing for the next one, aiming for improvement,” shares the former Everton midfielder with the Daily Telegraph. “It was a challenging transition, having prepared with Everton for two months without knowing my fate. Ultimately, I chose to join Manchester United, and though stressful, it ended on a positive note.”
“When I arrived at United, it felt like a whole new world. Everton was fantastic, but here it’s different—different atmosphere, different club, everything,” he continues. “It’s a testament to the club’s stature, being one of the most prestigious in the world.”
Amidst criticism and struggles to find his place on the field, Fellaini battled injuries. “Fitness is crucial for performance,” he admits. “I could play through injuries, but it affects my output. Being sidelined for three months was tough, especially when you’re eager to contribute to a new team and watching from the sidelines.”
Now recovered, Fellaini is determined to win over the United faithful, rallying the team to take accountability. “As players, we must step up,” he asserts. “It’s our responsibility to support the new coach in shaping Manchester United into title contenders.”
