“POWER FORWARD”: A NEW BASKETBALL PROGRAM TO HELP YOUTH IN NIGERIA

The National Basketball Association (NBA), the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Africare, and Exxon Mobil have announced the launch of “Power Forward,” a project aimed at using basketball to promote health and develop leadership skills among Nigerian youth. The initiative, launched in Abuja, involves former NBA star Hakeem Olajuwon, former NBA player Obinna Ekezie, and three-time WNBA champion Swin Cash. The program, implemented in 10 public and private schools in Abuja, focuses on teaching leadership skills and raising health awareness through a combination of classes and sports activities. The initiative aims to impact social change and equip young Nigerians with the skills needed for success. The partners are committed to providing basketball materials and equipment to each institution participating in the program. The initiative aligns with the efforts of the Nigerian government to improve public health and enhance economic prosperity. The program’s curriculum includes regular assessments and coaching supervision to guide students in achieving their goals. The launch event included basketball training sessions with Olajuwon, Ekezie, and Cash engaging with 100 young participants.
