Potential turnaround for Ounahi at Marseille?

Azzedine Ounahi, a midfielder for Olympique de Marseille, was recently rumored to be leaving the club after a sporadic 2023-2024 season, where he made 21 appearances and scored two goals in Ligue 1. However, the Moroccan international might now extend his stay with the southern French club.

Roberto De Zerbi, who is expected to take over as the new coach of Marseille, has expressed his desire to retain Ounahi for the upcoming season.

According to La Tribune OM, De Zerbi has already informed the club’s management that he wants the 24-year-old in his squad.

This development comes as a significant boost for Ounahi, who was previously anticipated to depart from Marseille.

Despite showing promise with the Moroccan national team, Ounahi has struggled to secure a regular starting spot at Marseille since his arrival from Angers in January 2023 for a transfer fee of 8 million euros.

His performance with the club at Canebière has not matched the high expectations set by his international play.

In recent months, Saudi Arabian clubs have shown a keen interest in Ounahi.

Although Saudi Arabia has primarily attracted experienced European players over the age of thirty, exceptions exist and are becoming more frequent.

At 24, Ounahi could potentially join the Saudi league for the 2024-2025 season.

However, this prospect appears to be diminishing following the recent statements from De Zerbi, his likely future coach.

Al Ittihad, where Ounahi’s compatriot Abderrazak Hamdallah currently plays, was notably interested in securing his services.

The ultimate decision, however, will rest with Ounahi himself.

He must choose between a renewed effort to establish himself at Marseille under a coach who values his abilities or pursuing a new adventure in Saudi Arabia, where he would compete alongside and against numerous football stars.

Ounahi’s potential continuation at Marseille under De Zerbi could provide him the stability and confidence needed to flourish in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

The southern club, which has a rich history and passionate fanbase, could be the ideal environment for Ounahi to rediscover his form and make a significant impact.

As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Ounahi’s decision.

Whether he stays at Marseille to fight for his place or moves to Saudi Arabia for a new challenge, his choice will undoubtedly shape the next phase of his promising career.
