West Ham United manager Nuno Espírito Santo has renewed his call for transfer reinforcements as the January window enters its final days, despite his side’s encouraging 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
Speaking after the win, which offered a timely boost amid an inconsistent campaign, Nuno made it clear that the result had not altered his assessment of the squad’s needs.
With just a week remaining before the market closes, the Portuguese coach who was born in Sao Tome believes further business is required if West Ham are to compete consistently across the second half of the season.
“We have one week to go,” Nuno said. “I still believe that we need to rebalance our squad. We need options in some positions.”
The Hammers have shown flashes of promise, particularly going forward, but Nuno has repeatedly stressed the importance of depth and flexibility, especially as injuries and fixture congestion begin to take their toll.
While pleased with the commitment and energy shown against Sunderland, he views squad balance as essential to sustaining momentum.
“We need to become more competitive,” he added. “I still believe in the work the club is doing.”
Attention has also centred on the future of Lucas Paquetá, with speculation intensifying over a possible move to Flamengo before the deadline. Nuno did not offer specifics on the midfielder’s situation but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the issue.
“What I hope is the situation to be solved as soon as possible,” he said. “Every part involved has to be solved and to be clear, so we have a direction to move forward.”
