Portuguese coach Jose Gomes has officially announced his departure from Zamalek, creating a buzz within Egyptian football circles, AfricaSoccer.com can confirm
Appointed in February 2024, Gomes made a significant impact, leading the “White Knights” to triumph in both the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup.
However, his decision to leave before the end of his contract, set to expire in the summer of 2025, has left fans and club officials disappointed.
Gomes’ exit follows an enticing offer from Saudi club Al-Fateh, reportedly worth USD250,000 monthly.
Despite efforts from Zamalek’s management, including a late-night meeting led by club president Hussein Labib, the Portuguese coach remained firm in his decision.
Sources suggest that Gomes was swayed by the financial package and the prospect of a new challenge in Saudi Arabia, even though Al-Fateh currently sits at the bottom of the Saudi League standings.
In response to his departure, Zamalek’s board is set to meet and chart a new course for the team, with a temporary replacement expected soon.
Club legend Ahmed “Mido” Hossam has been linked with a potential interim role.
