New Chelsea signing Dario Essugo has opened up about his ambitions and playing style following his long-term move from Sporting CP to Stamford Bridge.
The 20-year-old midfielder completed his €22.27 million (£18.8m) transfer earlier this month, becoming one of the first additions under Chelsea’s new strategic recruitment drive.
Born in Portugal with Angolan heritage, Essugo brings both technical quality and physical intensity to the Blues’ midfield.
His contract, which runs until 2033, reflects the club’s belief in his long-term potential and comes ahead of his possible debut in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking to Chelsea’s in-house media, Essugo shared insights into what supporters can expect.
“I’m a very aggressive player, I love to win back possession and I love to govern the pitch. I love to win!” he said. “I am also a player who loves to hold the ball, to create space with the ball and attack, but also help the defence when they need it.”
Off the pitch, the midfielder described himself as grounded and family-oriented. “I’m a fun guy once I warm up… I just need to get to know people first,” he added.
Essugo also revealed that Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League triumph in Porto left a lasting impression on him. “The most recent memory is the Champions League final the club won, which fittingly took place in Porto. I remember that well.”
His ambitions are clear: “I want to win as much as possible… Obviously, I want to win the Champions League, but also the Premier League because it’s very difficult.”
