Polokwane City survive late controversy to beat Richards Bay

Polokwane City began their Betway Premiership campaign with a 2-1 victory over Richards Bay on Sunday, although the match ended in controversy after a penalty awarded to the visitors was later overturned.

Rodney Maphangule and Tidimalo Molokwane scored for Polokwane City, while Simphiwe Mcineka pulled one back for Richards Bay. The result gives Rise and Shine an early boost as they look to build on last season’s top-eight finish.

Richards Bay, known as the Natal Rich Boys, were aiming to make a stronger impression in the new campaign after failing to finish among the league’s top eight last season. Both sides entered the fixture seeking to improve on their previous performances in the top flight.

Polokwane City took control in the 18th minute when new signing Giovanni Philander delivered a precise corner into the middle of the box. Maphangule met the cross and calmly headed the ball into the net to put the visitors ahead.

Richards Bay responded positively and came close to equalising before half-time. Thulani Gumede exchanged passes with Lindokuhle Zikhali before sending a powerful low effort towards the near side of the goal, but Lindokuhle Mbatha reacted well to keep it out.

Polokwane City almost extended their advantage when Philander produced a first-time volley from inside the penalty area. The attempt came as City struggled to clear the ball, but Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno made a sharp reflex save to deny him.

After the interval, Polokwane City made the first change of the match by replacing Philander with Malebogo Modise. Richards Bay did not make a change at that stage as the hosts continued to search for a way back into the contest.

The visitors eventually doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Banele Mnguni’s quick shot from the edge of the area struck the upright, but the rebound fell kindly for Molokwane, who finished into an unguarded net.

Richards Bay refused to surrender and reduced the deficit midway through the second half. Moses Mthembu delivered the ball into the area and Mcineka rose above the defence to head into the top corner.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser as the game entered its closing stages. Their hopes appeared to receive another boost when the referee initially awarded Polokwane City a penalty.

However, after a lengthy discussion involving the match officials, the decision was reversed. The change left the Richards Bay players visibly upset and ensured a tense finish, but Polokwane City held on for all three points.

Richards Bay’s next listed fixtures are against Chippa United, Durban City and Kaizer Chiefs.

Polokwane City are scheduled to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 before meetings with Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune United.
