A much-anticipated reunion between Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood at Olympique de Marseille is no longer on the cards, with the French midfielder now reportedly being offered to AS Monaco instead.
The move would have seen the former Manchester United duo line up together once again in Ligue 1, but financial limitations at Marseille have scuppered the prospect.
Pogba, who is of Guinean descent, had been linked with a variety of destinations as he plots his return to top-level football.
Clubs in Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League had expressed interest, while Marseille emerged as a serious candidate earlier in the transfer window.
However, the player’s wage demands appear to be a decisive factor in talks collapsing.
According to a report by Foot Mercato, Marseille are unable to meet Pogba’s salary expectations, despite their admiration for the 31-year-old.
The French club had considered Pogba a high-profile addition to their rebuilding plans, particularly given Greenwood’s successful loan stint last season and the potential appeal of reuniting the pair. But with budgetary constraints proving insurmountable, the option is now off the table.
Instead, Pogba is being offered to Marseille’s domestic rivals AS Monaco, who may be better positioned financially to accommodate the 2018 World Cup winner.
Monaco, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season, are understood to be weighing the prospect of adding Pogba’s experience and pedigree to their midfield ranks.
Pogba has not played competitively since receiving a suspension in September 2023 following a positive doping test.
