Player dies in road accident en route to Lagos league fixture

The Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its players in a road accident involving members of the team while travelling to Lagos for a league fixture.

Several other players sustained injuries in the crash, while the team’s driver was also seriously affected, according to the academy’s founder and chief executive officer, Ayisat Yusuf.

The team was travelling from Ikenne in Ogun State to honour a league fixture at the Olympic Pitch, Sonya, in Lagos State when the accident occurred.

Yusuf, a former Nigerian international and assistant coach of the Super Falcons, confirmed the tragedy in a statement but did not disclose the identity of the deceased player or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Describing the incident as a devastating loss, she said the academy had lost more than a footballer, emphasising the close bond shared by the players and everyone associated with the institution.

“Beyond being members of a football team, these girls are our children, our family and a huge part of everything we have built together,” she said.

“Losing one of them is a pain that is difficult to put into words, and our hearts are particularly heavy for the family of our departed girl.”

Injured players require urgent medical attention

Yusuf disclosed that some of the injured players required urgent medical attention and further investigations following the accident.

She extended her condolences to the family of the deceased player and appealed to members of the football community and the general public to support those affected by the tragedy.

The academy founder also assured that the institution remained committed to the welfare and recovery of the injured players, promising to provide further updates as more information became available.

The incident has once again brought attention to the dangers faced by Nigerian football teams and sporting contingents travelling by road to fulfil competitive fixtures across the country.

Crown FC, Heartland FC among clubs hit by road tragedies

The latest tragedy comes barely two weeks after Nigeria National League side Crown FC suffered a fatal accident while travelling to participate in a pre-season tournament on October 15.

Although no players died at the scene, the club’s 54-year-old driver, Yinusa Popoola Amole, also referred to as Yinusa Olalomi, later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash on the same night.

In August 2024, Heartland FC head coach Christian Obi died from injuries sustained when the club’s team bus crashed in Okigwe, Imo State.

The team was travelling to Ebonyi State for a pre-season tournament when the accident occurred, leaving several players and officials injured.

Two months later, Kano Pillars also experienced a similar incident involving their under-19 team.

Several players and their driver sustained injuries when their bus was involved in an accident while travelling to Jos for a youth league fixture. No fatalities were reported.

Ifeanyi George among victims of previous football road accidents

One of the most devastating road tragedies involving Nigerian football personnel occurred in March 2020, when Rangers International striker Ifeanyi George and two of his teammates died in an accident along the Benin-Ore Expressway.

The trio were travelling to Lagos following the suspension of the Nigeria Professional Football League when the crash occurred.

These incidents have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of footballers, coaches and other officials who undertake long-distance road journeys to honour domestic competitions and other sporting commitments.

The latest loss involving the Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy adds to that troubling history, leaving the Nigerian football community mourning another life lost while travelling for the game.
