Former UEFA president Michel Platini has described FIFA’s decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic ban as “a scandal”, adding to the growing criticism surrounding one of the biggest controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

UEFA intensified the pressure on world football’s governing body after releasing a strongly worded statement condemning the decision to lift the precautionary suspension imposed on the United States striker.

According to reports from Spanish newspaper Marca, UEFA viewed the move as unprecedented, unjustified and damaging to the integrity of the competition.

The decision has sparked widespread debate across the football world after FIFA allowed Balogun to remain eligible despite the forward receiving a red card earlier in the tournament.

“This is a scandal… that’s the only word that came to my mind,” Platini reportedly said in comments carried by the media.

Platini’s long-running dispute with FIFA continues

Platini’s remarks come amid his ongoing legal and civil dispute with Gianni Infantino and FIFA over corruption allegations dating back to 2015.

The former Ballon d’Or winner has long maintained that the events surrounding that period damaged his chances of leading world football’s governing body.

His latest criticism now places another prominent voice alongside UEFA and the Belgian Football Federation in questioning FIFA’s handling of the Balogun case.

Platini praises Olise and Deschamps

While criticising FIFA, Platini also used the opportunity to praise the performances of France midfielder Michael Olise and coach Didier Deschamps during the World Cup.

Speaking to French outlet L’Equipe, the former France captain highlighted Olise’s creative qualities and credited Deschamps for deploying the Bayern Munich player in a more central playmaking role.

“Olisei truly possesses all the qualities to be a number 10 like the players of the good old days. Modern football tends to place playmakers on the wings, and at his club, Olise plays on the right wing, just like Lamine Yamal, who also knows how to deliver this type of pass. But Deschamps, and this is where the coach’s intelligence shines through, knew how to adapt to the abilities of his players, and he will be the coach who brought back the role of a true playmaker.”

Platini’s comments come as France national football team prepare for their quarter-final showdown with Morocco national football team, with Olise expected to play a key role in France’s attacking plans.
