Pitso Mosimane appoints Marcus Mashilo as Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed Marcus Mashilo as the national team’s goalkeeper coach, completing his technical staff before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Bafana Bafana will face Guinea and Eritrea in Group D, with the squad assembling on Sunday ahead of their opening qualifier against Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Mashilo, who joined Marumo Gallants before the beginning of this season, will work with the national team during camps but will not be employed by the association on a full-time basis.

Mosimane has also appointed Morena Ramoreboli as his assistant, while Musa Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga are permanent members of the technical team.

“The technical is complete now. We’ve got Marcus Mashilo to help us as a goalkeeper coach. Marcus has experience. Marcus worked with me at Sundowns. Marcus worked with coach Manqoba (Mngqithi) at Sundowns. He worked with coach Rulani (Mokwena). He even went to work with coach Manqoba at Golden Arrows, (he is) at Marumo Gallants,” Mosimane told media.

Mashilo previously worked with Wendell Robinson and has experience coaching goalkeepers including Kennedy Mweene and Denis Onyango during his time at Sundowns.

“He has learnt a lot. He was an assistant (goalkeeper coach) to Wendell (Robinson), so Marcus has been around. Maybe he does not have that big name, but Marcus has been around. He has trained Kennedy (Mweene), he has trained Denis (Onyango). He has achieved a lot at Sundowns and contributed a lot of trophies that have been won. Good technical team, local also. For me, it’s important to support our local coaches and give them experience of working with Bafana. It’s good to have a local bench.”

Mosimane said Mashilo’s previous experience at Sundowns, where he worked alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, had helped prepare him for the international role. Mashilo also worked with Mngqithi at Golden Arrows before joining Marumo Gallants.

Bafana Bafana held their first training session at the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Sunday afternoon.

The squad is still awaiting the arrival of overseas-based players Olwethu Makhanya, Relebohile Mofokeng and Puso Dithejane.

The team’s first Group D qualifier against Guinea will be played at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, with Eritrea also standing between Bafana Bafana and a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
