The winner of the African Footballer of the Year by the BBC will be announced today, following the vote by internet users of the British channel, which concluded on November 25. Among the five contenders, none of them has previously claimed this award.
The frontrunner is Ivorian Yaya Touré, a two-time Best African Player in CAF and the only African named to the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or. Despite an average performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), Touré’s contribution to his club remains crucial. John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses, both instrumental in Nigeria’s continental trophy win at the beginning of the year, are also strong contenders. Additionally, Liverpool striker Victor Moses was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year last week.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with a successful season at Saint-Etienne and an impressive start with Borussia Dortmund, is another nominee. Jonathan Pitroipa, representing Burkina Faso, had a standout performance in the CAN, leading his team to second place and earning the title of the tournament’s best player.
The successor to Zambian Christopher Katongo will be revealed today at 5:35 p.m. GMT, as announced by the BBC.
