Pierre Sage explains Ismaïla Sarr booing after Crystal Palace return

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage has described the booing aimed at Ismaïla Sarr as “perfectly normal” after the Senegal striker returned to action in Thursday’s 4-0 Europa League win over Lech Poznan.

Sarr came off the bench in the 74th minute to make his first appearance of the season, having wanted to leave Crystal Palace during the summer.

His return came during Palace’s most convincing performance of the campaign so far, with the Eagles producing a four-goal victory in their opening Europa League match.

Sarr’s appearance was therefore a significant moment for both the player and Sage, who was pleased to see the Senegal international back on the pitch.

“I know the fans adore him and I think he deserves that love ,” Sage emphasized. “ It’s always difficult to come back after a long injury like that, but the most important thing for us is to see him take his first steps on the pitch; with time and playing time, things will get better and better.

This afternoon, I reviewed footage of his goals from last year in the Europa Conference League. If he can replicate those kinds of performances with us, it will be extremely positive for the team. ”

Despite Sage’s positive assessment of the forward, Sarr was met by some boos from Crystal Palace supporters when he entered the match.

The Senegalese striker was also booed again at the end of the game, creating a contrast between the reception from some supporters and the backing he received from his manager.

Sage, however, said the reaction was understandable given the uncertainty surrounding Sarr’s future during the summer.

For the Palace manager, the important development was that Sarr had finally returned to competitive action and could now begin building up his fitness and match rhythm.

Sarr’s first appearance of the season came with Palace already in control of their Europa League match against Lech Poznan. The 4-0 result provided the Senegal international with an encouraging setting for his return.

Sage also pointed to Sarr’s performances from last season, when the forward impressed in the Europa Conference League.

The Palace manager believes a return to that level could prove valuable for the team as Sarr continues to regain his form.

The manager’s comments underline his focus on moving forward with Sarr now back in the squad.

After his first minutes of the season against Lech Poznan, the striker will look to build on his return as Crystal Palace continue their campaign.

For Sage, the priority is to give Sarr time on the pitch and allow him to regain his rhythm after his long absence.
