Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the prolific Gabonese striker for Olympique de Marseille (OM), is carving out his legacy in French football. With an impressive tally of 29 goals across all competitions, Aubameyang’s feats have drawn inevitable comparisons to the legendary Didier Drogba, who notched 32 goals during the 2003/04 season with OM.
However, Aubameyang remains steadfast in his humility, refusing to entertain direct comparisons with Drogba.
Speaking to RFI, the striker emphasized the uniqueness of each player’s journey and contribution to the sport:
“It’s normal that we talk about that given the figures, but I don’t think there is a possible comparison, since Drogba remains Drogba, and he’s a legend.
That being said, I’m very happy and very proud that people are thinking about it, that’s for sure, but we are two completely different players.”
Acknowledging Drogba’s status as a football icon, Aubameyang expressed his admiration and respect for the Ivorian striker, whom he considers not just a legend, but also his idol.
Despite his own successes at OM, Aubameyang remains grounded, refusing to overshadow the legacy of his idol:
“I met Drogba this season and I think he is happy and proud. Especially since I already told him in the past that he was my idol when I was younger.
We talked about it recently, because I had made a pair of shoes based on him, maybe he didn’t realize it, but he’s someone who inspired a lot of people, me notably. So, it’s a reference.”
Aubameyang’s reluctance to compare himself directly to Drogba underscores his humility and reverence for footballing legends.
As he continues to make his mark at OM, Aubameyang hopes to carve his own path while honoring the legacy of those who came before him.
