Phillipp Mwene steps up recovery away from Mainz squad

Phillipp Mwene is working toward a return after a brief spell away from action, completing an individual training session as he rebuilds his fitness with Mainz 05 and Austria.

The 32-year-old defender was left out of Austria’s squad for the 3-1 Nations League victory over Kosovo. His absence came shortly after an impressive performance against Israel, when he played the entire match and scored the crucial goal that put Austria 2-1 ahead in the 90th minute.

That late strike made Mwene the match-winner and underlined his importance to the national team. However, the experienced wing-back was not risked for the following fixture as he managed his workload.

Mwene trained separately from the rest of the squad on Monday, according to Kicker. The session was part of a cautious return programme rather than a sign of a serious setback.

Austria’s coaching staff reportedly remain relaxed about the situation and expect the Mainz player to be available for the team’s next two matches. His gradual reintegration should allow him to regain full sharpness without being rushed back.

Mwene has made four appearances for Mainz this season, while his consistent performances continue to make him a valuable option on the flank.
