Basel winger Philip Otele is being linked with a move to Birmingham City, with the Championship club monitoring the Nigeria forward’s situation in Switzerland.

Otele, 26, is currently valued at €5.00m and is registered with FC Basel 1893, but fresh speculation has emerged suggesting Birmingham are exploring a deal to bring the left-sided attacker to St Andrew’s. The reported probability of the move remains unclear, listed only as “?” in the latest transfer data, underlining that talks, if any, are at an early stage.

The data indicates a complex contractual picture for Otele, with no confirmed start or end dates for his current Basel agreement. That uncertainty has prompted suggestions he could become a free agent depending on how his situation is resolved, a factor that would significantly affect any negotiations and potential fee.

Otele is primarily a left winger who prefers his right foot, offering the kind of inverted wide option that Championship sides often seek for direct attacking play. Born in Port Harcourt on 15 April 1999, he has built his career via a varied route across Europe and the Middle East, featuring for Teesside University and Wolviston FC in England before moving to FK Kauno Žalgiris in Lithuania.

Subsequent spells at UTA Arad and CFR Cluj in Romania saw his market value rise steadily from €50,000 in 2020 to €2.50m by mid-2024, reflecting his progression. A transfer to Al-Wahda FC in the United Arab Emirates followed, with Basel later bringing him in on loan and then again from the Abu Dhabi club, during which time his value climbed to the current €5.00m mark in October 2025.

With Birmingham seeking attacking reinforcements, any move for Otele would represent a significant step into English league football for the Nigerian and could prove a pivotal moment in shaping the next phase of his career if the interest turns into a formal bid.
