Phil Jones tips English-Ghanaian midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for January exit from Man United

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has suggested that rising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could look for a move away from Old Trafford in January if his game time does not improve.

The 20-year-old England international was prevented from going out on loan during the summer but is believed to be unsettled at the club after a frustrating start to the season.

Mainoo, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, has long been regarded as one of United’s brightest academy products.

His breakthrough two seasons ago included a commanding display at Everton on his first Premier League start, which Jones described as “mature” and “terrific”.

Speaking on Stadium Astro, Jones said he “really, really admire[s]” the teenager and recalled how he “absolutely bossed the game” at Goodison Park.

However, Jones believes the midfielder’s situation has changed. “It just looks like at the minute he’s out of favour. The manager’s already come out and stated that he’s not going to be playing with Bruno. It’s going to be him or the other and you’re not going to dislodge Bruno in the form that he’s in,” he noted, referencing Bruno Fernandes’s influence on the side.

With United out of European competition this season, opportunities for rotation are limited. Jones added: “Time will tell, but I think by Christmas and January time, if he’s not had the game time that he’ll like, then I’m sure he’ll be trying to force a loan move.”
