Phil Foden ‘jumping for joy’ after Manchester City win despite red card

Phil Foden was reportedly “jumping for joy” in the Manchester City dressing room after his team defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite being sent off in the first half.

Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute for kicking Bruno Fernandes, leaving Manchester City to play with 10 men for more than 70 minutes.

Despite the setback, Manchester City secured their first victory at Old Trafford in almost three years, with Erling Haaland scoring a controversial goal to settle the match.

Elliot Anderson, who was named man of the match, revealed Foden’s reaction when he joined his team-mates in the dressing room.

“Clearly, he was hugely disappointed not to be involved in the whole game, but he was jumping for joy in the dressing room, just as we all were,” Anderson said, according to The Sun.

“The red card obviously made the game much more difficult, but we all came together. It showed real fighting leadership from the players.”

Anderson added: “It was not ideal, Phil, for you to be sent off, but we all fought for it. It changed the way we had to play, but we put in a really good performance in the circumstances.”

The 23-year-old midfielder also reflected on his own display after helping Manchester City withstand United’s pressure.

“I gave everything I could for the team – the individual battles and playing through the lines,” he said. “I think I put in a good performance, stayed calm in possession with the team and helped everyone.”

Anderson had impressed in both of Nottingham Forest’s matches against Manchester United last season. His performances in midfield helped convince Manchester City he was the ideal player for the role.

The England midfielder opted to join Manchester City in a deal worth £116 million. During his unveiling in July, he described his new club as the “kings of Manchester”.

The victory was made more notable by Manchester City’s ability to hold on with 10 men after Foden’s dismissal, while Haaland’s disputed goal ultimately proved decisive.
