Pharaoh crown and shemagh take centre stage after Salah’s Trabzonspor double

Mohamed Salah’s two goals for Trabzonspor against Istanbul Basaksehir prompted jubilant scenes among the club’s supporters, with celebrations continuing outside the stadium after Sunday’s Turkish league match.

Salah scored both of Trabzonspor’s goals in a 2-1 victory in the second round of the Turkish league, making an immediate impact for his new side and opening his account for the club.

The result was greeted enthusiastically by Trabzonspor fans, many of whom remained outside the ground after the final whistle to celebrate both the win and the Egyptian forward’s decisive contribution.

Video footage published by Al Jazeera Egypt’s account on X showed dozens of supporters gathering in a lively atmosphere. The fans chanted and celebrated for some time after leaving the stands, with Salah’s performance at the centre of the scenes.

Two fans became particular focal points during the celebrations. One wore a pharaonic nemes, the royal head covering associated with the kings of ancient Egypt, while another appeared in an Arab shemagh.

Supporters gathered around the pair as chants and celebrations mixed Egyptian and Arab imagery. The display reflected the admiration shown for Salah and the importance attached to his role in securing the victory.

Salah’s goals represented the first time he had scored for Trabzonspor, according to the footage’s description, and they provided a memorable start to his time with the club. His two finishes were enough to settle a match in which Trabzonspor claimed all three points against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The celebrations came before a demanding week for Trabzonspor, who are due to play in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

They travel to face Hungarian club Ferencvarosi at the Ferencvarosi stadium, with Trabzonspor needing to overturn a 1-0 defeat suffered in the first leg in Turkey. The tie therefore remains finely balanced, but the club will have to recover from the first-match setback to progress.

Trabzonspor will then return to domestic action on Monday, 31 August, when they face Amedspor in the third round of the Turkish league.

For now, attention remains on Salah’s productive league debut and the striking scenes it produced among the Trabzonspor support. The pharaonic headwear, the shemagh and the repeated chants for the Egyptian forward gave the celebrations a distinctive character after a victory shaped by his two goals.
