Peter Waweru to referee Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola

Kenyan referee Peter Waweru has been appointed to take charge of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Angola, according to Daily Sports.

Egypt will begin their qualifying campaign at Cairo International Stadium on Friday, 25 September, with kick-off scheduled for 22:00.

The 44-year-old Waweru has previously officiated one Egypt senior international. He was the referee when Egypt defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June 2024.

His appointment will also be remembered for his involvement in Egypt’s match against Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations Under-23 tournament. Morocco won that game 2-1, while Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber was sent off by Waweru in the 18th minute.

Waweru has also refereed four matches involving Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League, as well as one match featuring Pyramids in the same competition. He has additionally taken charge of two matches involving Zamalek in the Confederation Cup.

Egypt have been drawn in Group Two of the African qualifying competition alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi.

After hosting Angola on 25 September, Egypt will travel to face South Sudan on 29 September. That match is scheduled to begin at 15:00 Cairo time.

Egypt are also due to play South Africa in a friendly on 4 October.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be staged jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 17 July 2027.
