Percy Tau made a remarkable impact in his debut season in Belgium, earning the accolade of best player in the Proximus League, the country’s second division, on Monday.
The South African striker joined Union Saint-Gilloise last summer on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in England and quickly established himself as a standout performer. In 23 appearances, Tau contributed six goals and seven assists, dazzling fans and opponents alike with his skillful dribbling, vision, and attacking prowess. His dynamic performances have made him a key figure for Union and a rising star in Belgian football.
Tau’s influence on the pitch was recognized overwhelmingly in the Proximus League’s voting, where he received 228 votes. He finished well ahead of Nikola Storm of Mechelen, who garnered 89 votes, and his Union teammate, the Comorian forward Faïz Selemani, who collected 84 votes. The results reflected both his consistency and the impression he has made in his first European season.
Looking ahead, Tau is expected to play a significant role for South Africa at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. With his talent and recent form, he will be one of the key players to watch for Bafana Bafana, carrying the hopes of his national team into the continental competition.
Tau’s debut season has not only showcased his individual quality but also signaled his potential to make a lasting mark in European football while continuing to be a central figure for his national team.
