Pedro Rodriguez was given a warm reception at Spotify Camp Nou before Barcelona’s La Liga match against Getafe on Saturday, with the former forward carrying out the ceremonial kick-off after recently announcing his retirement.
The former Barcelona player received a guard of honour from the club’s supporters and was presented to the crowd on the pitch. His appearance extended a farewell that began on Friday, when Barcelona held an official tribute to one of the most recognisable players of the club’s modern era.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Pedro was welcomed back to the stadium as Barcelona prepared for their eighth La Liga fixture of the season. The ceremonial kick-off provided another opportunity for the club and its fans to recognise his contribution.
Friday’s farewell was attended by several of Pedro’s former team-mates, including Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco were also present at the event.
Pedro expressed his gratitude for the tribute and said that being able to say goodbye to the club, which had been his home for many years, represented the best possible ending to his football career.
Barcelona also marked the occasion by presenting their individual La Liga awards for September shortly before the match began.
Hans Flick received the award for the month’s best manager, while Raphinha was named the best player. Joao Cancelo’s goal was voted the best of September.
The combination of Pedro’s return and the presentation of the three awards made the pre-match ceremony one of the main features of the evening at Spotify Camp Nou.
Barcelona posted a message on social media after the former player’s appearance, saying: “Spotify Camp Nou has honoured you as you deserve, Pedro ❤️ You are and always will be a Barca legend.”
