Angola manager Pedro Gonçalves has outlined his intentions for an audacious style of play at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Gonçalves emphasised his desire to implement “positive football” while acknowledging the quality of opponents. “We want to play positive football while respecting our opponents,” remarked the 47-year-old.
Gonçalves singled out Algeria as “serious candidates for the title,” highlighting their awareness of the skills and pedigree within the Desert Foxes squad.
Angola is drawn against Algeria in their opening Group D fixture on 15th January.
The Palancas Negras then face Mauritania three days later, before concluding the group stage against Burkina Faso on 23rd January.
It is a formidable series of clashes for Angola in their first AFCON appearance since 2013.
“Our intention is to be ambitious, while retaining respect for our opponents,” Gonçalves noted.
“The tournament will be extremely competitive, but we aim to implement an offensive style of play.”
“The players understand the game plan and style I wish to use.
We must play without fear, utilising the qualities within our squad,” added the former Benfica midfielder.
Angola’s best AFCON performance came as runners-up in 2008 and 2010.
Seeking to recapture former glories, Gonçalves’ bold strategy will be put to the test against elite African opposition next month.
“We have worked extensively on tactics and implementing our philosophical approach.
My message to the players is simple – go out and express yourselves on the biggest stage,” Gonçalves concluded.
