Pedersen hails ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ move after joining Orlando Pirates from Sogndal

Sebastian Pedersen says he could not refuse what he describes as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” after completing his move to Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates from Norwegian side Sogndal.

The 27-year-old centre-forward has signed for Pirates for an undisclosed fee, with the club confirming the transfer on Monday evening. He is expected to arrive in South Africa this week ahead of the Buccaneers’ opening league fixture of the season against newly promoted Milford FC.

Pedersen joins from Norwegian 1st Division outfit Sogndal, where he scored eight goals and provided one assist in 14 appearances last season.

The Norwegian, speaking to Sogndal’s official club website shortly before his departure, said the size and status of Orlando Pirates were decisive in his choice.

“This feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is such a huge club that I couldn’t pass up the chance when it arose,” Pedersen said.

Growing enthusiasm for South Africa move

Pedersen admitted he initially had reservations about leaving Norway for South Africa, but said his enthusiasm grew as he learned more about his new club and surroundings.

“At first, I was a bit sceptical, but the more I’ve learned about the club and life in South Africa, the more excited I’ve become. I am very grateful that Sogndal reached an agreement with Orlando Pirates,” he said.

He added that the decision was made easier by the backing he received from his current employers, who agreed terms with Pirates to facilitate the transfer.

Pedersen’s career so far

Pedersen has represented Norway at every youth level from under-16 through to under-21, but he has yet to earn a senior cap for the national team.

He first came to wider prominence during the 2016/17 campaign, when he finished as the leading scorer in Norsk Tipping-Ligaen avdeling 2 – Norway’s fourth tier – netting 25 goals to claim the golden boot.

His form there helped him establish himself in the Norwegian professional ranks, culminating in his spell at Sogndal, where his scoring return in the most recent season drew interest from abroad.

Fond farewell to Sogndal

As he prepares to link up with Pirates, Pedersen said leaving Sogndal had been an emotional step after a period in which he felt a strong connection with both the club and the town.

“I’ve had an incredible time at Sogndal. I felt welcome from the very first second, and the local community embraced me,” he said.

“It has been a fantastic place to be, both on and off the pitch. I’m left with many great memories and am grateful for my time here.”

Orlando Pirates, who lifted the Betway Premiership title last season, will be hoping Pedersen’s goal-scoring record in Norway can translate to South African football as they begin the defence of their crown against Milford FC.
