Pay Them Now: Super Falcons demand action as Women’s AFCON looms

With just days remaining before the kickoff of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, the Super Falcons of Nigeria find themselves entangled in a familiar and unfortunate narrative.

While they prepare to compete at the continent’s highest level, off the pitch they are once again grappling with financial instability and neglect from the very authorities that should be supporting them.

Africa’s most decorated women’s national team, the Super Falcons boast a proud legacy built on grit, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

But despite their immense contributions to Nigerian football, they are still owed outstanding match fees — an unsettling recurrence of the financial disputes that disrupted their 2022 WAFCON campaign, when players were forced to go on strike in protest.

This persistent issue casts a shadow over their achievements. It signals a lack of appreciation and structural failure that not only disrespects the players’ sacrifices but also risks demoralising a team that has been a consistent source of national pride.

The Falcons train under demanding conditions, compete with unwavering commitment, and consistently elevate Nigeria on the global football stage.

Yet they are rewarded with broken promises, delayed payments, and minimal institutional support.

Their strength and determination in the face of such adversity are nothing short of remarkable.

However, no team—no matter how talented—should have to fight two battles: one on the pitch, and another off it. Recognition must go beyond verbal praise and symbolic gestures. It must be material, clear, and timely.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must step up. With the tournament fast approaching, there is still time to correct this wrong.

The outstanding dues must be paid immediately, and structures should be put in place to ensure financial transparency and consistency going forward.

These athletes deserve the peace of mind to focus entirely on football, knowing they have the full support of the nation behind them – not just in cheers, but in actions.
