Paulo Sergio begins Wydad rebuild with African glory in sight

Paulo Sergio says the chance to challenge for major honours was the decisive factor in his decision to become Wydad’s new head coach, despite receiving financially more lucrative offers from clubs in the Middle East.

The Portuguese manager, speaking to Moroccan website Le Site Info Sport, said Wydad had offered him a genuine opportunity to return to competing for trophies – something he had lacked during his recent coaching appointments.

“At Wydad I have a real opportunity to compete for titles, something I have not had the chance to do in recent years, so this factor had a major influence on my decision,” said Paulo Sergio.

The former coach had been in discussions with several Middle Eastern clubs, whose proposals were worth more financially than Wydad’s offer. However, he chose the Moroccan club because of the sporting project presented by its new administration.

“I was negotiating with a number of clubs in the Middle East, and their financial offers were higher, but I chose Wydad,” he said. “For me, the club’s sporting project is extremely attractive, and that was one of the main reasons that led me to choose it.”

Paulo Sergio takes charge at a crucial point for Wydad, who finished fifth in the league last season. He believes the changes made at boardroom level have created a clearer direction and strengthened his confidence in the club’s plans.

“Last season Wydad finished the league in fifth place, but the administration has changed, and there is a new team working with a clear vision and seeking to do everything to the highest possible standard,” he said.

The Portuguese manager added that preparations for the new challenge were already under way. His immediate ambition is to restore Wydad to its accustomed position among Africa’s leading clubs and compete for silverware.

“We started work on Monday, and we have the ambition of competing for titles and winning cups, which is fitting for one of the strongest and most famous clubs in Africa,” said Paulo Sergio.

“I believe the new administration will give us the opportunity to rebuild the team and put it on the right path.”

His appointment represents the beginning of a fresh phase for Wydad after a disappointing league campaign. Paulo Sergio’s comments suggest that the club’s long-term sporting ambitions, rather than the financial value of the contract, were central to his decision to take the job.

The new manager will now work with the club’s new leadership as they attempt to rebuild the team and return Wydad to the level expected of one of Africa’s best-known sides.
