The future of Paul-José Mpoku at Standard Liège remains uncertain as speculation continues over a possible move abroad. The 27-year-old Congolese midfielder has attracted interest from Major League Soccer, with New England Revolution showing repeated determination to sign him.

Last January, Standard Liège received a firm bid from the MLS side, but the Belgian club decided to reject the offer, keeping Mpoku in Liège despite the potential financial benefits. At that time, the decision allowed Mpoku to continue his season with the club, where he has been a key contributor, tallying eight goals and five assists.

Nearly four months after the initial approach, and with the MLS transfer window closed in Europe, New England Revolution renewed their interest, reportedly offering €4 million to secure the midfielder. However, according to Het Nieuwsblad, Mpoku himself declined the proposal, and the two parties could not reach an agreement. The reasons for his refusal appear linked both to sporting considerations and personal preference, indicating that a move to the United States is not guaranteed despite the club’s persistence.

Standard Liège holds a release clause for Mpoku, similar to that of his teammate Mehdi Carcela, meaning that a sufficiently high offer could potentially trigger negotiations in the future. Last year, the Revolution’s interest in both players highlighted their ambition to strengthen their squad with experienced European talent, but logistical and contractual hurdles prevented any deals from materializing.

For now, Mpoku remains at Standard Liège, where he has proven to be an influential figure in midfield. His future, however, continues to be the subject of speculation, with potential suitors monitoring his performances closely. The combination of his release clause, consistent form, and experience makes him an attractive target for clubs abroad, even if the player has yet to make a definitive decision on leaving Belgium.

As the next transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Mpoku will continue with Standard Liège or finally pursue opportunities outside Europe, with the New England Revolution potentially renewing their interest or other clubs stepping in. His choice will likely balance sporting ambitions, financial considerations, and the desire to compete at the highest possible level.
